Market Update: See How a Strong 2019 Performance Impacted Your Portfolio

US and Canadian stock indices closed the year with double digit returns in 2019 as global equities had their best year in a decade.

Here’s how this and other market trends affected your portfolio:

Performance[block]0[/block]

ETF Portfolios

December performance 1-Year performance
ETF Safety Portfolio 0.31% 8.13%
ETF Conservative Portfolio 0.50% 11.37%
ETF Balanced Portfolio 0.49% 15.00%
ETF Growth Portfolio 0.59% 16.75%
ETF Aggressive Portfolio 0.45% 18.91%

All WealthBar ETF Portfolios delivered strong returns in 2019 overall. December performance was led by international and US equities. The fixed income asset class delivered mostly flat returns during the month. Given this, portfolios that had the highest equity allocation delivered the highest return, with fixed income focused portfolios delivering more modest returns.

Private Investment Portfolios

December performance 1-Year performance
Safety Private Portfolio 0.13% 6.67%
Balanced Private Portfolio 0.16% 9.81%
Aggressive Private Portfolio -0.83% 9.11%

Overall for 2019, all of the WealthBar Private Portfolios delivered positive returns, with the Balanced Private Portfolio delivering close to double digit returns. Performance was mixed for the month of December as the Aggressive Private Portfolio underperformed.

The Nicola Wealth Management (NWM) US Tactical High-Income Equities Fund (CAD) held in the Aggressive Private Portfolio declined 1.85%, while the NWM Real Estate Fund fell 1.79%, both contributing to the model’s weak December return.
